If you have trouble writing great things about yourself, try using someone elses perspective and write from their point of view. What would a mentor, friend, or previous employers say about you?5. Ask for help. Before you submit your cover letter, have someone read it and honestly answer whether it sells you as the best person for the job. Unless their answer is a resounding yes, go back and revise it.6. Keep it short and sweet. Its easy to get carried away, especially when you are excited abo ut a particular job. Diagnosing Your Sales Prospects Needs

Diagnosing Your schlussverkauf Prospects NeedsDiagnosing Your Sales Prospects NeedsAs a salesperson, your role is to help your prospects solve problems and create new opportunities. Your product or service will improve their situation in some way. But before you can show the prospect how that will happen, you must uncover their needs. Finding a prospects needs works a lot like a doctors appointment. The prospect is willing to talk with you because he sees that he has a problem, but he may not know or realize the specific nature of his problem. Like a doctor, your task is to ask detailed questions to identify the specific symptoms, and then use that information to diagnose a cure (hopefully, the product or service youre selling). Make Your Prospect Comfortable The first step in the diagnosis process is to give your prospect a level of comfort. Youll be asking some probing questions later on, and if the prospect isnt comfortable speaking with you, they might not be willing to answe r those questions honestly. One way to make your prospect feel safer is to quickly demonstrate your understanding of their situation. If youve done your homework ahead of time by asking some qualifying questions and doing some research, you can give a quick summary of what you understand their situation to be and then ask them to confirm. Ask the Right Questions Once youve broken the ice, you need to get an idea of the prospects general state of mind. Start with some fairly wide questions, like What is your biggest goal right now? What is stopping you from reaching that goal? What steps have you taken to overcome that obstacle? These questions will determine your prospects biggest need as they understand it and give you a glimpse into how theyre thinking. Effective Sales Questions Asking the right sales questions will help you more closely understand any prospects needsPowerful Sales Questions to Ask Your ProspectsSales Questions That Sell Now that youve determined the most sign ificant issues as the prospect understands them, you can probe a bit deeper with some more specific questions. Youll start with some questions about the past, which can help you identify a baseline. For example, if youre selling productivity tools, you can start by asking about how well your prospects employees have performed in the past, how well theyre performing now, what their expectations are as to their performance, as well as how their customers have reacted to their performance level. This line of questioning will give you a solid grasp of how the prospects needs have changed recently (if at all) and where they stand in relation to the goal you uncovered. Determine the Level of Satisfaction If the prospect seems to be doing fairly well compared to their past situation, then your task is to probe for ways that they could be doing even better. Questions like, Are you happy with your current level of performance? What areas would you like to see improved further? and so on can help identify areas of opportunity where your product or service can help. On the other hand, if the prospect is clearly going downhill compared to their past performance, you can now drill down further to identify just how bad the problem is. Often the best way to uncover the real problem is to keep asking Why? For example, if your prospect says that theyre unhappy with the number of data entry errors they see, ask Why are your employees making a higher percentage of errors? They might say that theyre struggling with a new software program. You can then ask, Why are they having a hard time with the program? They might explain that it doesnt synchronize well with their existing system. Now you have a much better idea of the exact issues the prospect is facing. Asking diagnostic questions is a powerful tool in sales because not only does it enable you to uncover the prospects needs, it also helps him to understand what those needs truly are. Many prospects have never really anal yzed their situation, and what they think of as a primary need may only be a symptom of a deeper need- which your questions can help to uncover.

Finding a New Purpose for an Ultrafast Laser

Finding a New Purpose for an Ultrafast Laser Finding a New Purpose for an Ultrafast Laser Finding a New Purpose for an Ultrafast LaserSinisa Vukelic, a lecturer in the departement of mechanical engineering at Columbia University, attributes the direction of his career to a mix of my interest and serendipity, a fortunate development that recently led to a breakthrough turning an imaging tool into a noninvasive treatment device for common eye conditions. As a doctoral student in mechanical engineering at Columbia, he worked with ultrafast lasers to change the properties and structure of glass. After earning his degree, he set out to search for an area of research using the speedy femtosecond laser that he could call his own.I realized that in biology, femtosecond lasers were considered a glorified cutting tool, Vukelic says. I felt that there had to be something more we could do with them. Then I welches looking at the oscillator and thinking can I do something with a low-power laser.Fo r You Whats It Like for an Engineer to Work at a Startup After a bit more research, he laid out some theories, and one thing led to another. The result is what Vukelic believes is the firststudy to use a regimen with a femtosecond laser oscillator for noninvasive change of corneal curvature for treatment of such problem as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and irregular astigmatism. The femtosecond laser oscillator delivers pulses of very low energy at a rapid tarif to selectively and locally alter corneal tissue. Modifying the corneal curvature changes the focusing ability of the eye, which results in permanent vision correction. Vukelics team recently published its paper in Nature Photonics.Using the tool in this way alters biochemical and biomechanical properties of any collagenous tissue without causing damage to cells or tissue in the area. Vukelics earlier work with glass served him well because of the similarities in treating glass and the cornea, since both are dielectrics.Cor neal topography before (top) and after the treatment (bottom), paired with virtual vision that simulates the effects of induced refractive power change. Image Sinisa Vukelic/Columbia EngineeringTreatments are currently available for these eye conditions, but they include surgery and wearing eye glasses or contact lenses, something many people want to avoid. While surgery has a relatively high success rate, it cannot be performed on some people and has post-surgical risks associated invasive procedures. Furthermore, myopia (nearsightedness) is reaching epidemic proportions, affecting almost 2.5 billion people globally. Scientists believe it may be due to people looking afar less and less because they are glued to computers and smartphone screens, indicating that myopia is only going to continue to increase. We had to work out the entire protocol from scratch because this had never been done before, Vukelic says. I feel like that was the main challenge. In addition, we are a young lab and we dont have a lot of resources. So it was How do we make the most of the resources we have? My philosophy is lets see what we can do with what we have. Thats what I tell my lab team Lets make sure we achieve something with what we have.Critical to the projects success was confirming that the laser did indeed succeed in the crosslinking, or formation of chemical bonds, that alters collagen properties and results in the new shape and structure. The team hopes to start clinical trials by the end of the year.We probably have at least five or six years ahead of us, maybe even more, before it could be on the market to correct peoples vision, Vukelic says. As engineers, we try to make things that make life better. Its not just academic curiosity. Thats a huge part of it. You want to make a useful tool. And when you start dealing with humans, you have to be very cautious and careful. The technique can be used on other collagen-rich tissues as well Vukelics lab has been collaborating wit h the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory of Prof. Gerard Ateshian to treat early osteoarthritis. The preliminary results are very, very encouraging, he says.
